Physical education is planned, progressive learning that takes place in school curriculum timetabled time and which is delivered to all pupils. This involves both ‘learning to move’ (i.e. becoming more physically competent) and ‘moving to learn’ (e.g. learning through movement, a range of skills and understandings beyond physical activity, such as co-operating with others). The context for the learning is physical activity, with children experiencing a broad range of activities, including sport and dance.
At Quinton Primary School, we believe that physical education is essential for developing healthy, active lifestyles, building confidence, and promoting teamwork. We want every child to enjoy being active, try new sports, and develop the skills to keep themselves fit and healthy for life.
All children take part in two one-hour PE lessons each week:
In addition, pupils in Years 2 – 6 take part in Active Ten every day. These short bursts of physical activity are designed to boost energy, focus, and positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle, led by our Year 6 Sports Leaders.
At Quinton Primary School, we recognise the importance of swimming as a life skill and part of a healthy lifestyle. Pupils take part in swimming lessons for a full term in both Year 4 and Year 5, giving them plenty of time to build water confidence and develop their skills. Any children who have not met the National Curriculum expectations by the end of these sessions take part in a block of top-up lessons in Year 6 to ensure they have the best chance of success. By the end of Key Stage 2, the National Curriculum expects all children to:
We are committed to ensuring children leave our school confident and safe in the water.
Our Sports Leaders play an important role in promoting physical activity and positive play across the school. They help to organise and lead daily Active Ten sessions, encouraging younger pupils to take part in short bursts of physical activity and develop healthy habits throughout the school day. Sports Leaders also support the delivery of our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme by helping to organise equipment, model positive play, and encourage inclusive participation during break and lunchtime. In addition, they assist staff with the organisation and running of sporting competitions and events, including inter-school activities and our whole-school Sports Day. Through these responsibilities, Sports Leaders develop valuable leadership, teamwork, and communication skills while helping to inspire others to enjoy being active.
