Quinton Primary School > Curriculum > Personal Development

At Quinton Primary School, we believe that education goes beyond academic success. We are committed to developing well-rounded individuals who are confident, resilient, and ready for the challenges of life beyond the classroom. Our approach to personal development ensures that every child is supported in growing socially, emotionally, morally, and culturally.

Our Approach to Personal Development

We provide a broad and rich curriculum that nurtures children’s character, well-being, and understanding of the world. Our focus includes:

  • Building Character and Confidence – Encouraging independence, resilience, and a growth mindset.
  • Promoting Emotional Well-being – Ensuring children feel safe, valued, and able to express themselves.
  • Developing Social Skills – Encouraging teamwork, communication, and positive relationships.
  • Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion – Promoting respect, tolerance, and appreciation of different backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures.

Pupil Leadership

Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) Development

We embed SMSC learning throughout our curriculum, assemblies, and wider school experiences. This helps children develop self-awareness, empathy, and a strong moral compass.

British Values

Quinton Primary School British Values_V2Download

At our school, we actively promote British Values to ensure that our children are well-prepared for life in modern Britain. We uphold and instill the values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

These values are woven into everyday school life through initiatives such as voting for School Council members, engaging assemblies, and dedicated PSHE lessons. Our curriculum is designed to help children appreciate diversity, challenge stereotypes, and understand the impact of discrimination. Through carefully planned lessons and discussions, we encourage respect for differences, foster inclusivity, and empower our pupils to stand up against injustice.

By promoting equality, tolerance, and mutual respect, we aim to give every child the confidence to express their views, celebrate diversity, and contribute positively to their communities.

We actively promote the fundamental British values of:
🔹 Democracy – Encouraging pupil voice and decision-making.
🔹 Rule of Law – Understanding why rules matter in school and society.
🔹 Individual Liberty – Supporting children to make safe and informed choices.
🔹 Mutual Respect and Tolerance – Fostering an inclusive and accepting school environment.

We promote these British values in the following ways:

Democracy

  • By providing children with a broad general knowledge of public institutions and services, as well as promoting respect for them
  • Teaching children how they can influence decision-making through the democratic process
  • Including in the curriculum information on the advantages and disadvantages of democracy and how it works in Britain
  • Encouraging children to become involved in decision making processes and ensuring they are listened to in school
  • Helping children to express their views
  • Teaching children how public services operate and how they are held to account
  • Modelling how perceived injustice can be peacefully challenged
  • Having a lunchtime debating club

Rule of Law

  • Ensuring school rules and expectations are clear and fair
  • Helping children to distinguish right from wrong
  • Helping children to respect the law and the basis on which it is made
  • Helping children to understand that living under the rule of law protects individuals
  • Including visits from the police in the curriculum
  • Teaching children aspects of both civil and criminal law and discussing how this might differ from some religious laws
  • Developing restorative justice approaches to resolving conflicts

Individual Liberty

  • Supporting children to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Encouraging children to take responsibility for their behaviour, as well as knowing their rights
  • Modelling freedom of speech through pupil participation, while ensuring protection of vulnerable children and promoting critical analysis of evidence
  • Challenging stereotypes
  • Implementing a strong anti-bullying culture

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

  • Promoting respect for individual differences
  • Helping children to acquire an understanding of, and respect for, their own and others’ culture and ways of life
  • Challenging prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour
  • Organising visits to places of worship
  • Developing links with faith communities
  • Developing initial personal thinking skills
  • Discussing differences between people, such as differences of faith, ethnicity, disability, gender or sexuality and differences of family situations, such as looked-after children or young carers, as well as wealth and the distribution of wealth and support from the government through funding such as pupil premium and other benefits that support educationally

Protected Characteristics

At Quinton Primary School, we are committed to promoting equality, respect and inclusion for all members of our school community. We recognise and value the diversity of our pupils, families and staff, and we actively promote understanding and respect for the protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010.

Through our curriculum, assemblies, policies and daily practice, we ensure that all pupils feel safe, valued and supported, and that discrimination in any form is not tolerated. We aim to help children develop an understanding of difference, celebrate diversity and grow into respectful, responsible citizens who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

  • Performances and Celebrations – Class assemblies, plays, and showcases that build confidence and creativity.
  • Community Engagement – Encouraging social responsibility through charity work, environmental projects, and local events.

Well-being and Support

We are dedicated to supporting children’s mental and emotional well-being by:

  • Providing a nurturing and inclusive school environment.
  • Ensuring pupils have trusted adults they can talk to.
  • Running well-being initiatives and mindfulness activities.
  • Offering additional support through pastoral care and external agencies where needed.
