In Year 6, children are expected to read every night at home. This daily reading helps to develop their fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, which are essential skills for success across the curriculum. Each child has a homework diary where they should record the page numbers they have read and any notes if required. Parents are encouraged to check and sign the diary regularly to support their child’s reading progress. Looking for more inspiration? Books for topics is a BRILLIANT resource for finding books on all subjects and for all ages. You can sign up to their blog and mailing list and get recommended reads straight to your inbox every month.
Children will receive one page of Maths homework every week. This homework is sent home on Wednesday and must be returned to school the following Monday. The tasks will reinforce the mathematical concepts being taught in class and provide an opportunity for independent practice. It is important that children complete this work carefully and on time so that teachers can review their understanding.
Each week, children will receive a list of spellings to learn. You can find this on the Spelling Overview for each term. These spellings reflect the spelling rule or pattern that is being taught in class during that week. Typically, there will be around ten words to practise, along with three additional words selected from the statutory Year 5/6 spelling list. To support learning, the spellings will also be uploaded to SpellingFrame, which is an excellent tool for extra practice through interactive games and tests. Regular practice is essential to improve accuracy and confidence in spelling.
We have P.E. every TUESDAY and THURSDAY afternoon, so please ensure that your child comes in their correct kit on these days. Kit should include school P.E. t-shirt, school jumper, tracksuit bottoms or shorts and trainers.

Online safety is very important for all children in school. However, it become particularly important for Year 6s because they are becoming more independent online, using games, apps, and messaging without constant supervision. At this age, children are curious, trusting, and keen to fit in with friends, which can make them vulnerable to risks such as cyberbullying, fake profiles, and sharing personal information. The habits they form now will shape how they use technology in the future, so learning to stay safe online is essential for their wellbeing.
To stay safe online, children should never share personal details like their full name, address, school, or passwords, and should only talk to people they know in real life. They need to think before posting because anything shared online can stay there forever, and always be kind and respectful to others. If something feels wrong or upsetting, they must tell a trusted adult straight away. Using strong passwords, avoiding suspicious links, and keeping gaming chats friendly are also important steps to staying safe online. Parents should regularly check their child’s online activity and encourage an open and honest approach so children feel comfortable talking about what they do online.
