What a fantastic day we had celebrating journalism with a group of children across Years 3–6! From the moment the day began, the children threw themselves into learning what makes great journalism. We explored trusted news sites, like Newsround, to discover the techniques journalists use to report news and engage their audiences.
After this, the children split into groups to plan their own stories. They brainstormed what they wanted to report on in our school and thought carefully about interview questions for both staff and fellow pupils. During breaktimes, they conducted interviews and collected the information they needed to craft their articles.
By afternoon, everyone was hard at work producing 300-word news articles for our school news blog, The Quinton Quibbler. Stories included:
Pupils’ thoughts on OPAL play
The importance of PE and its impact on students
Behind-the-scenes work of our dedicated office team
Insight into school trips and what children enjoy most
Updates on the building works happening on the school roof
But the excitement didn’t stop there! The children then turned their articles into short news bulletins, stepping into the shoes of reporters as they presented their stories live.
I cannot stress enough how hard these children worked all day. They were dedicated, creative, and collaborated beautifully as a team. It was a true delight to spend the day with such a fantastic group of young journalists. With their talent and enthusiasm, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them go on to brilliant careers in journalism—we should sign them up immediately!
