Forest School

Quinton Primary School > Curriculum > Forest School

At Quinton Primary School, we are proud to offer Forest School, an inspiring, learner-led outdoor experience that encourages children to explore, discover, and grow in a natural environment. Rooted in the belief that nature is a powerful teacher, our Forest School sessions provide hands-on learning opportunities that foster confidence, resilience, and a deep connection with the world around us.

The Positive Impact of Forest School

Forest School has been shown to have numerous benefits for children’s physical, emotional, and social development. Through regular sessions in the outdoors, children build self-esteem, develop problem-solving skills, and improve their physical health. The calming influence of nature also enhances well-being and mental health, helping children to manage risks, regulate emotions, and develop perseverance.

A Learner-Led Approach

At the heart of Forest School is a learner-led philosophy, where children take ownership of their learning through exploration and discovery. Rather than following a rigid curriculum, they are encouraged to follow their natural curiosity, ask questions, and develop practical skills in their own time. Our trained Forest School leaders support and guide children, allowing them the freedom to take risks, make choices, and learn from their experiences.

Opportunities for Children

Forest School provides a wealth of opportunities that go beyond the classroom. Children can:

  • Develop essential teamwork and communication skills
  • Enhance their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
  • Engage in activities such as den building, fire lighting, tool use, and wildlife exploration
  • Learn about sustainability and environmental responsibility
  • Build resilience and independence in a safe yet challenging outdoor environment

Key Objectives of Forest School

Our Forest School program is designed to:

  • Foster confidence and self-esteem through hands-on experiences
  • Encourage a sense of adventure and love for the outdoors
  • Support emotional well-being by promoting mindfulness and reflection
  • Develop resilience and perseverance through challenges in nature
  • Inspire creativity and imagination in a natural setting

By embracing the principles of Forest School, we empower our children to become confident, independent learners who respect and appreciate the natural world. Through this unique approach, we nurture not only academic growth but also the personal development and well-being of every child.

Curriculum Enrichment

At our school, we believe that learning goes beyond the classroom, which is why we offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities to inspire and challenge our pupils. From exciting clubs such as sports, music, art, and coding to special workshops, educational trips, and visiting speakers, there is something for everyone to explore and enjoy. These activities help children develop new skills, build confidence, and discover their passions in a fun and supportive environment. We encourage all our pupils to take part, try something new, and make the most of these wonderful opportunities!
