Maths

Quinton Primary School > Curriculum > Maths

At Quinton Primary School, mathematics lies at the very heart of our curriculum and is fundamental to every child’s success. We place the highest importance on ensuring that all pupils develop strong skills in number, calculation and mathematical reasoning, as we recognise that these are essential for accessing the wider curriculum and for everyday life. Our mathematics curriculum is carefully planned and progressively sequenced from Early Years to Year 6, fully meeting the statutory expectations of the National Curriculum for England, and ensuring that every child becomes a confident and competent mathematician.

As a Maths Mastery school, our teaching is underpinned by the principles of the White Rose Maths approach, where concepts are taught in small, coherent steps to ensure deep and secure understanding. We prioritise the development of fluency in calculation, enabling pupils to build strong foundations in number and to recall key facts with confidence and accuracy. This strong grounding is vital, and we are committed to ensuring that all children keep up and no child is left behind.

Reasoning and problem-solving are at the core of our daily mathematics lessons. Pupils are given regular opportunities to explain their thinking, justify their methods and make connections across different areas of mathematics. Through structured mathematical discussion, children learn to articulate their ideas clearly, challenge one another respectfully and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. This emphasis on talk ensures that learning is active, engaging and meaningful.

Mathematics is taught with purpose and relevance, with pupils applying their skills across a range of contexts both within and beyond the mathematics lesson. We ensure that children experience a broad and balanced curriculum that allows them to see the value of mathematics in the real world. Through careful questioning, variation and challenge, all pupils are supported to achieve their full potential.

We are passionate about creating a culture where mathematics is valued, enjoyed and approached with confidence. Our aim is for every child to leave Quinton Primary School with strong calculation skills, secure reasoning abilities and the confidence to apply their mathematical understanding in a wide range of situations, fully prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.
