Phase 1 – Information

Quinton Primary School > Curriculum > English > Phonics > Phase 1 – Information

What Is Phase 1 Phonics?

Phase 1 Phonics is the very first step in your child’s journey toward learning to read and write. At this stage, we’re not yet focusing on letters or sounds of the alphabet. Instead, we’re building something just as important—listening and speaking skills.

These early skills help children:

  • Tune into sounds in the world around them
  • Speak clearly and with confidence
  • Take turns in conversations
  • Understand and use language thoughtfully

This phase lays the foundation for future phonics learning, especially for Phase 2, when children begin learning actual letter sounds.

What Will My Child Learn in Phase 1?

Phase 1 is divided into seven key areas, or “aspects,” each designed to support a different part of your child’s communication development. These are fun, active, and often musical—and there are lots of ways you can join in at home!

Aspect 1: Environmental Sounds

Children learn to notice and name the sounds all around them—from birds chirping to cars driving by.

Activities you can try at home:

  • Go on a listening walk
  • Play sound bingo or guess the sound

Aspect 2: Instrumental Sounds

This aspect helps children explore and describe different sounds made by instruments or household items.

Fun ideas:

  • Tap, shake, and scrape objects to compare their sounds
  • Play instruments along with a story
  • Explore loud and quiet sounds
  • Make instruments from recycled materials

Aspect 3: Body Percussion

Children explore rhythm and sound using their own bodies!

Try at home:

  • Clap or stomp to music
  • Play “copy my rhythm” games
  • Sing action songs with claps and stamps

Aspect 4: Rhythm and Rhyme

This stage develops a love of rhymes and introduces early poetry and word patterns.

At-home ideas:

  • Read rhyming books together
  • Play rhyming bingo
  • Clap out the syllables in words (like your child’s name!)

Aspect 5: Alliteration

Here, we focus on words that start with the same sound (like big bear or silly snake).

Activities to try:

  • Play “I-Spy” with sounds instead of letters
  • Find objects around the house that start with the same sound

Aspect 6: Voice Sounds

This is all about distinguishing between different vocal sounds and to begin oral blending and segmenting.

Try this fun game:

  • Use a toy (like Metal Mike the Robot) to sound out words (e.g., /c/-/u/-/p/ for “cup”) and see if your child can blend the sounds together

Aspect 7: Oral Blending and Segmenting

This is the final step before learning letter sounds. It helps children hear how sounds come together to make words, or break a word into its sounds.

You can try:

  • Say: “Can you find the /b/-/a/-/g/?” and let your child find the bag!
  • Show an object like a sock and ask, “What sounds can you hear in sock?”

How You Can Support at Home

The best part? These skills can be built through play, music, and simple daily routines. Here’s how:

  • Talk about the sounds you hear on a walk or in the garden
  • Encourage your child to speak in full sentences and listen carefully during conversations
  • Sing nursery rhymes or silly songs together
  • Read books aloud daily and make time for talk about the story

Below check out our exciting  “Phase 1 Phonics – Home Learning Challenges” which cover each of the aspects your child will need to be confident in. Here you will find many more ideas to support your child with their phonics phase 1 learning journey at home.

These activities are fun, interactive, and set the stage for confident, successful readers.
