Sports Premium Grant

Quinton Primary School > Key Information > Sports Premium Grant

At Quinton Primary School, we are committed to giving every child the chance to enjoy, participate, and achieve in sport. One way we are able to do this is through the Primary PE and Sport Premium Grant which is a government initiative that provides extra funding to improve the quality of physical education, school sport, and physical activity.

What is the Sports Premium Grant?

The Sports Premium is additional funding provided by the government to all primary schools in England. Its aim is to help schools make sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, ensuring that all children develop healthy, active lifestyles.

The amount each school receives is calculated based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6, with a set lump sum plus an additional amount per pupil. This funding is given directly to schools and is ring-fenced, meaning it can only be spent on improving PE and sport provision.

How the Sports Premium Works

The funding is allocated annually, and schools have the freedom to choose how best to use it, as long as it directly benefits pupils’ physical activity opportunities. The focus is on creating lasting impact, not just short-term benefits, so improvements must be sustainable for future cohorts of pupils.

Areas the Grant Must Be Spent On

The Department for Education specifies that the Sports Premium must be used to make additional and sustainable improvements in PE and sport, such as:

  1. Engaging All Pupils in Regular Physical Activity
    • Increasing opportunities for daily activity (e.g., active playtimes, after-school clubs, active learning in lessons).
    • Targeting children who are less active to help them take part more regularly.
  2. Raising the Profile of PE and Sport Across the Whole School
    • Using sport and physical activity to support whole-school improvement, wellbeing, and positive behaviour.
    • Celebrating sporting achievements and encouraging participation through events and assemblies.
  3. Increasing Staff Knowledge and Skills in Teaching PE
    • Providing high-quality training and professional development for teachers and teaching assistants.
    • Using specialist coaches to work alongside staff to improve confidence and expertise.
  4. Offering a Broader Range of Sports and Activities
    • Introducing new activities to inspire pupils, such as dance, yoga, or non-traditional sports.
    • Ensuring all children have the chance to try something new.
  5. Increasing Participation in Competitive Sport
    • Providing opportunities for pupils to take part in competitions and tournaments at school, local, or county level.
    • Developing partnerships with other schools and sports organisations.

By using our Sports Premium funding in these areas, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of sport, encourage healthy lifestyles, and give every pupil the opportunity to shine.
