Homework Expectations

Reading

We are passionate about fostering a love of reading and promoting independence in every pupil. To support this, we encourage children to read at home for at least 15 minutes each day, helping them to develop fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

The reading record should be used to record daily reading, and these diaries are checked regularly. We welcome parental involvement -even with independent readers – to discuss the text and support understanding, helping children to engage more deeply with what they read.

Spelling

At the start of each half term, pupils receive a list of spellings along with a spelling rule focus for the week. These rules are taught in school, as well as children having opportunities to practise these words in class, but regular home practice is also expected. To support learning, there is a weekly spelling test every Monday.

Maths

Children receive weekly Mathletics homework, which involves completing one page from their Schofield and Sims book. Books are sent home every Wednesday and should be returned to school by the following Monday.

If homework has not been completed by Monday, children will be asked to attend Homework Club during lunchtime to ensure they are prepared for the marking session.

In addition, children are encouraged to practise their Maths KIRF (Key Instant Recall Facts) regularly at home. A sheet is sent out with the focus areas for each half term at the beginning of the year. Here you will find the year 4 Key Instant Recall facts (KIRF) Overview:

Year 4 Multiplication Check

In Year 4, children take part in the government Multiplication Check, which is a short online assessment designed to check their knowledge of multiplication tables up to 12 × 12. The test consists of 25 timed questions and is intended to assess whether pupils can recall multiplication facts quickly and accurately. It helps teachers identify any areas where a child may need additional support, so targeted learning can ensure every pupil develops confidence and fluency in times tables.

To prepare for the check, pupils practise their multiplication tables both in class and at home. We encourage families to support their children by practising little and often, using a variety of methods such as flashcards, quizzes, or online games. This regular practice helps children feel confident and comfortable with the test, making it a positive and successful experience.

Every child also has access to Times Tables Rock Stars, and this is a highly beneficial way of practising times tables. Login details for this can be found in the front of the reading record.

Topic

At the start of each term, children receive a Knowledge Organiser for their current topic. This organiser includes key facts, vocabulary, and concepts that they will cover throughout the term and can be used at home to reinforce learning and support discussions about their learning.

In addition, children are given an optional homework grid linked to the topic. The activities on the grid are designed to be engaging, creative, and enjoyable, allowing pupils to explore the subject in different ways while consolidating their learning. The tasks vary in style and challenge, offering opportunities for research, problem-solving, artistic expression, and practical activities. While the homework is optional, it encourages children to take ownership of their learning, pursue their interests, and develop new skills at their own pace. Families are welcome to support and participate in these activities, making learning a fun and collaborative experience at home.

P.E.

This year, P.E. lessons with Mrs Timms take place on Mondays and with Onside Coaching on Thursdays. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing the correct kit on these days. The kit should include a school P.E. t-shirt, school jumper, tracksuit bottoms or shorts, and trainers. Wearing the correct kit helps children take part safely and confidently in all activities.
