Intent, Implementation, Impact

Intent

At Quinton Primary School, our intent is to deliver a high-quality geography curriculum that inspires curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Through the Kapow Primary Geography scheme of work, we aim to equip pupils with a secure knowledge of locational and place-based understanding, human and physical geography, and essential geographical skills. We want our children to develop a strong sense of global awareness and responsibility, understanding how the world is interconnected and how human and physical processes shape our environment. Our geography curriculum is designed to nurture inquisitive, open-minded learners who appreciate diversity, sustainability and their role within the wider world.

Implementation

Geography is taught through the carefully sequenced Kapow Primary scheme, ensuring clear progression of knowledge and skills from EYFS to Year 6. Lessons are engaging and knowledge-rich, incorporating map work, fieldwork, enquiry-based learning and the use of high-quality resources to bring learning to life. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to support understanding and retention. Opportunities for discussion, investigation and critical thinking enable pupils to explore geographical questions and issues in depth. Where possible, learning is enhanced through trips, local fieldwork and cross-curricular links, allowing children to apply their skills in meaningful contexts.

Impact

As a result of our geography curriculum, pupils develop a secure body of knowledge and the skills needed to think and work like geographers. They can confidently use maps, atlases and digital mapping tools, interpret data, and explain key human and physical processes. Children leave Quinton Primary School with a strong understanding of their local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world, alongside an appreciation of cultural diversity and environmental sustainability. Most importantly, they develop curiosity, critical thinking skills and a lasting interest in the world around them, preparing them well for the next stage of their education and for life in a global society.

Why we use Kapow

We chose Kapow because it:

  • Ensures learning builds in a clear, age-appropriate way each year.
  • Makes geography exciting through engaging topics and real-world examples.
  • Gives children plenty of opportunities to be active, hands-on learners.
  • Helps pupils see the importance of caring for the planet.

By the time your child leaves Quinton Primary, they will have a strong understanding of the world, confident map skills, and a thoughtful awareness of the environment and their role within it.
