History

Quinton Primary School > Curriculum > History

At Quinton Primary School, history is a central driver of our curriculum. Our history curriculum is a carefully designed scheme of work, developed in school through a thoughtful selection of high-quality existing schemes. We have chosen and combined the most effective topics and approaches to ensure full coverage of the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum for History in England.

Our lessons are structured to build pupils’ knowledge and understanding over time, with clear progression across key historical strands. Children learn about the past in a way that helps them understand how the world has developed into its present form. They are encouraged not only to acquire knowledge, but also to think critically, ask questions, investigate evidence and develop skills as young historians.

We believe that history plays a vital role in helping children make sense of the world. It supports their understanding of diverse societies, cultures and environments, and fosters respect for the complexity and fragility of how our world has been shaped over time.

Through a carefully planned progression of knowledge and skills, we aim for every child to develop a love of learning about the past. Pupils build confidence in using historical vocabulary and concepts, and gain the understanding they need to become informed and active citizens. We want our children to value the importance of preserving, sharing and learning from history, so that they can contribute thoughtfully to the future.

Enrichment Opportunities

At Quinton Primary School, enrichment opportunities play a vital role in bringing the history curriculum to life and supporting the aims of the National Curriculum. Through carefully planned experiences such as visits to museums, historical sites and themed in school days, pupils are given the opportunity to deepen their understanding of key periods, events and individuals. These activities allow children to engage with artefacts, explore real historical environments and develop their enquiry skills in meaningful contexts. By linking enrichment opportunities to each year group’s topic, from exploring a Victorian classroom to experiencing a World War Two themed day, pupils build a richer chronological understanding and a stronger connection to the past, fostering curiosity, engagement and a lasting interest in history.
