PSHE

Quinton Primary School > Curriculum > PSHE

At Quinton Primary School, we are committed to equipping our pupils with the essential skills they need for life. We support children in learning how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain positive relationships, and develop into active, responsible citizens who contribute confidently to the society around them. To support us in achieving this, we use the whole-school PSHE scheme of work ‘Twinkl Life’.

Twinkl Life is a comprehensive collection of well-researched, professional resources to support positive mental health and emotional wellbeing for the whole school community. It includes a complete, whole-school scheme of work for PHSE, Citizenship and Relationships Education, featuring units on British Values, Global Citizenship, Personal Safety, Health, RSE, Mental Wellbeing and more, supporting our school to deliver outstanding SMSC provision. Our PSHE planning and resources are fully in line with the PSHE Association Programme of Study and exceed the requirements for Statutory Relationships and Health Education. The scheme intends to develop the whole child through carefully planned and resourced lessons that develop the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to protect and enhance their wellbeing.

Our PSHE Scheme of Work is split into thematic units:

Health and Wellbeing – The Health and Wellbeing strand of Twinkl Life helps children understand how to care for their physical, mental and emotional health. It supports pupils in developing the knowledge, skills and confidence to make healthy choices, manage their feelings and know how to stay safe.

Living in the Wider World – The Living in the Wider World strand of Twinkl Life helps children understand their role in the community and society. It supports pupils in developing the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make responsible choices, manage money, and engage positively with the world around them.

Relationships – The Relationships strand of Twinkl Life helps children understand how to build and maintain positive, respectful connections with others. It supports pupils in developing the skills to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, show empathy, and form healthy friendships and family relationships.

We deliver our PSHE sessions weekly through class assembly, and encourage paired, group and whole-class discussion to share our thoughts and ideas in a safe, comfortable and familiar environment.

Below, you will find the whole-school long term overview with dates included of significant upcomming events for the year. This shows the themed areas that each class will be looking at and when. They run in a ‘spiral curriculum’. This means that the same theme will be looked at every 2 years, but different aspects will be covered within this them and prior knowledge will be built upon.

Each year group also has their own overview, knowledge organiser and parent/carer guide for each half-termly unit.

EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED) is at the heart of children’s learning. It helps young children develop a strong sense of self, build positive relationships, and understand their emotions. Through play, exploration, and adult support, children learn to manage their feelings, cooperate with others, take turns, and develop confidence and independence. PSED lays the foundation for lifelong social skills, resilience, and emotional wellbeing.

It is split into 3 sections:

Self-Regulation – Self-regulation in PSED helps children learn to understand and manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. In the Early Years, children develop skills to stay focused, follow routines, control impulses, and respond positively to challenges, laying the foundation for confidence, resilience, and successful learning.

Managing Self  – Managing Self in PSED helps children develop independence and take responsibility for their own needs. In the Early Years, children learn skills such as dressing themselves, making healthy choices, following routines, and taking care of their belongings, building confidence and self-reliance for everyday life.

Building Relationships – Building Relationships in PSED helps children develop the skills to make friends, cooperate, and interact positively with others. In the Early Years, children learn to share, take turns, show empathy, and resolve conflicts, fostering strong, respectful, and supportive connections with peers and adults.

In Quinton Primary EYFS, PSED is delivered through a mix of structured activities, guided play, and everyday routines. We strongly believe that children develop social and emotional skills naturally by exploring, interacting with peers, and receiving gentle support and encouragement from adults. Planning is child-led to reflect the needs and interests of the children. Children take part in circle time and discuss topics and themes that they can relate to in their own lived experiences.

Please see the Nursery and Reception class pages for more information.

British Values

As a school, we promote British Values ensuring that our children leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. We support the values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.  Through aspects of school life such as voting for school council members, assemblies and discrete PSHE lessons, these values are embedded within our curriculum. We plan assemblies and lessons to teach the children about our values, respecting similarities and differences, tackling stereotypes and understanding why some people discriminate. We aim to empower children to have a voice and to stand up against discrimination, valuing equality, tolerance and mutual respect.
