At our school, we are proud to be developing our play provision through the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme. OPAL is a nationally recognised approach that helps schools transform playtimes into rich opportunities for creativity, physical activity, social development, and wellbeing.
OPAL is based on the understanding that play is essential for children’s physical health, emotional wellbeing, and social development. The programme supports schools in creating engaging outdoor environments where children can explore, build, imagine, collaborate, and take safe risks.
Rather than structured, adult-led activities, OPAL encourages child-led play. Children are provided with a variety of open-ended materials and spaces that allow them to invent games, construct, role-play, problem-solve, and express themselves freely.
✔ Improved physical health
Active outdoor play encourages movement, coordination, strength, and stamina while reducing sedentary time.
✔ Enhanced social skills
Children learn to cooperate, negotiate, share, and resolve conflicts as they create games and work together.
✔ Greater creativity and imagination
Loose parts and open-ended resources inspire imaginative play, storytelling, and innovation.
✔ Increased confidence and resilience
Opportunities to explore, take managed risks, and solve problems help children build independence and self-belief.
✔ Better emotional wellbeing
Outdoor play reduces stress, supports mental health, and helps children feel happier and more relaxed.
✔ Improved focus and readiness to learn
Children return to the classroom refreshed and ready to concentrate after active, fulfilling playtimes.
By embracing OPAL, we are committed to providing every child with joyful, inclusive, and meaningful play experiences. We believe that high-quality play opportunities support the whole child and help them develop essential life skills that extend far beyond the playground.
We are excited to continue developing our outdoor spaces and resources to ensure playtimes are a positive and enriching part of every school day.
